Despite strict measures in place, the pandemic situation in Russia kept setting new records in mortality rate.

On Wednesday, 589 fatalities, the highest single-day count since the start of the outbreak, pushed the death toll to 41,053, the country's emergency task force said in a report.

The country recorded 25,345 new cases over the past day, taking the tally of infections to 2.34 million, and active cases to 475,999. The number of recoveries rose by 26,882 to reach 1.83 million.

Russia’s caseload remains the fourth highest in the world, behind the US, India, and Brazil.

Authorities have been taking steps to curb the rapidly rising infections, with many regions in the country having extended quarantine measures until the end of January.
