STOCKHOLM, Sweden

Five people have been arrested as far-right protesters from the Nordic Resistance Movement (NRM) and counter-demonstrators clashed in Stockholm on Saturday, according to local media citing police.

Two people were reported injured -- one activist and a police officer -- and around 30 people were escorted away from a protest of an estimated 500 people.

NRM protesters marched under the slogan "Stop the Immigrant Invasion!” through the heart of the city. They were met with police barricades throughout the day.

According to newspaper Dagens Nyheter, the situation temporarily escalated as counter demonstrators tried to push through the barricades. Several thousand people had gathered nearby to hold an anti-racist demonstration.

In the afternoon, a fight broke out between NRM activists and police at a nearby subway station.

"We've had some problems there and we're currently taking control of the subway station," police spokesman Lars Bystroem told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet.
