Spain: New COVID-19 infections remain stable

OVIEDO, Spain

Spain’s daily infections remained stable on Friday with the Health Ministry reporting 155 cases over the past day.

The tally of infections nationwide has reached 243,209.

Of the new cases diagnosed, 74 were in Madrid.

Spain's death toll from the virus has hit 27,136, but no new fatalities have been reported for the past several days.

A public workers union in the capital region has said outbreaks have been detected in various disability centers.

Last week, the union sent a letter to Madrid authorities saying that the “outbreaks were not under control".

Authorities have not yet responded to their concerns.

Spain’s Health Ministry announced that on Monday several Spanish regions including Valencia and Galicia will be able to further ease lockdown restrictions.

All of Madrid, parts of Catalonia and parts of central Spain will remain in phase two as the rest of the country will be in phase three or beyond.

Yet, once the state of alarm comes to an end on June 21, Spain’s Health Minister Salvador Illa said that the central government will no longer be able to limit mobility within the country, except for in extreme circumstances.

That means in 11 days, all Spanish residents, including those from hard-hit areas like Madrid, will be able to travel to other parts of the country for the first time since mid-March.
