Russian authorities ask Supreme Court to recognize LGBT movement as 'extremist'

MOSCOW

Russia's Justice Ministry on Friday requested the Supreme Court to recognize the LGBT movement as "extremist."

"An administrative claim has been filed with the Supreme Court to recognize the international LGBT social movement as extremist and to ban its activities on the territory of the Russian Federation," the ministry said in a statement published on its website.

It said various signs and manifestations of extremist orientation have been revealed in the activities of the LGBT movement, including the incitement of social and religious discord.

The hearing to consider the case has been scheduled for Nov. 30.
