Pierre Kompany, father of Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, has been elected as the first black mayor in Belgium.

Kompany, 71, who is in active politics since 2006, won the local elections on Sunday in Brussels suburb of Ganshoren.

Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kompany is a mechanical engineer.

Vincent Kompany, 32, released a video message on his official Instagram account to congratulate his father.

“History! We are so proud of you dad. Come from DR Congo as a refugee in 1975. Now you have won the trust of your commune by becoming the first black mayor elected in Belgium! It was long but it is progress. Massive congrats!,” he said.
