Kosovar president says EU lifted all punitive measures against country

LONDON

The European Commission has implemented its decision to lift all punitive measures against Kosovo, the country’s president said Tuesday.

"We welcome today’s confirmation by the Commission that this decision has now been fully implemented," Vjosa Osmani wrote on the US social media company X.

In December, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU will lift all measures imposed on Kosovo since 2023 and release financial assistance.

The EU introduced measures in June 2023 after tensions flared in northern Kosovo when ethnic Serbs boycotted the April 2023 elections that brought ethnic Albanian mayors to power.

The president thanked the commission and partners for their support in bringing this matter to a close, which "resulted in lifting the unjust measures that negatively affected the lives of the people of Kosovo."

"Kosovo remains committed to working closely with the EU and moving forward on our path toward EU candidate status," she added.
