Amid rising tide of cases, new curfew imposed on all prefectures with highest alert levels of 3 and 4

ATHENS

Greece on Friday recorded more than 800 infections for a third consecutive day, with total cases in the past 24 hours reaching 841.

From the total confirmed cases, 43 were tracked at the country’s entry points while 76 have been identified to be linked to already known clusters health authorities said.

Total infections have now reached 29,057 since the first case in the country.

The National Public Health Organization (EODY) registered another 10 deaths, bringing up the toll in Greece to 559.

In a televised briefing on Friday, member of the Health Ministry's coronavirus committee Gkikas Magiorkinis said that the daily rate of infections in Greece has doubled in two weeks, while deaths rose closer to 10.

The alarming rise on Greece’s viral cases prompted Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday to announce the mandatory use of face masks in all public areas either closed or open.

In addition, a curfew will be imposed from 12.30 a.m. to 5 a.m. as of Saturday in all prefectures with alert levels three and four which are the highest.

Attica and Thessaloniki prefectures now stand at level three, while Kastoria and Kozani prefectures in the North of Greece are in level four.
