German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Monday that Berlin will fulfill its responsibility and contribute to Ukraine's security guarantees.

Speaking at the annual Ambassadors Conference in Berlin, Wadephul said that unless Russia is stopped in Ukraine, it will continue its aggressive behavior and direct it even more forcefully against European countries.

"I want to be clear: The future of Europe is being decided in Ukraine. It will show whether borders on the European continent can be redrawn by force," Wadephul said, adding that despite US President Donald Trump's peace efforts Russia continues to use every pretext to pursue its war.

"In this situation, I also want to say: Even though the fighting has not yet stopped, and we don't know when it will end – Germany will, of course, do its part to provide security guarantees for Ukraine," Wadephul said. "It is our responsibility. We must take much greater responsibility for our own security."
