A record 22 people were fatally shot by police during nationwide operations in Germany in 2024, an analysis by state news agency DPA showed on Tuesday.
The statistics suggested the figure for 2024 could be the highest since German reunification in 1990, with previous highs of 19 deaths recorded in 1995 and 1999.
Most incidents involved interventions targeting individuals with psychological issues, often armed with knives.
As many as 10 people were shot dead by German police in 2023, 11 in 2022 and eight in 2021.
