Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon condemned a newly adopted Israeli law allowing the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners, calling it discriminatory and warning it could undermine justice and security.
“An Israeli law introducing the death penalty is clearly discrimination against Palestinians,” Fajon said in a post on X.
She added that everyone should be equally held accountable for acts of violence, stressing that capital punishment is not a solution.
“Security cannot be built on discrimination and justice cannot exist without fairness,” Fajon said.
Earlier Monday, Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, approved the law in its second and third readings by 62 votes to 48, according to Israeli media.
The legislation allows Israeli courts to impose the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voting in favor.
The move has drawn criticism from international actors and is expected to further intensify debate over legal and human rights issues in the region.
