Berlin Brandenburg Airport strike strands 57,000 passengers
All flights canceled as Verdi labor union walkout halts departures and arrivals
GENEVA
Around 57,000 passengers were affected on Wednesday as operations at Berlin Brandenburg Airport were suspended due to a strike, according to the airport’s official website.
“No regular passenger flights will be possible at Berlin Brandenburg Airport,” airport operator FBB said, as the one-day warning strike led to the cancellation of 445 departures and arrivals.
The industrial action was called by the Verdi labor union, which said the strike was a “direct consequence of the employers' refusal to present a negotiable offer.”
The dispute centers on wage negotiations involving about 2,000 airport employees, including staff in fire services, air traffic operations and terminal management, according to Berlin.de.
Airport authorities said the strike made it “impossible” to maintain flight operations, even though some services, such as ground handling and security checks, are managed by external contractors.
FBB urged passengers to check directly with airlines for rebooking options and alternative travel arrangements.
