Ireland unveils new support package for Ukraine as Zelenskyy makes first official visit
Dublin pledges major non-lethal military and reconstruction support
LONDON
Ireland on Tuesday announced an additional €125 million ($145 million) in financial support for Ukraine as Irish Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepare to sign a new five-year cooperation roadmap in Dublin.
The 2030 roadmap on Ukraine-Ireland Partnership will be formally agreed later on Tuesday during the Ukrainian leader’s first official visit to the country, accompanied by first lady Olena Zelenska.
According to Irish media reports, the plan expands on an agreement signed in Kyiv in September 2024 and is intended to deepen bilateral ties across political, security, economic and cultural spheres.
It includes commitments on recovery and reconstruction support, innovation and education partnerships, and the creation of an Ireland-Ukraine Economic Forum.
Announcing the package, Martin said it was an honor to welcome Zelenskyy “at this time of great challenge for his country.”
“His immense bravery, and the resilience of the Ukrainian people, are examples to us all,” he said.
Of the new funds, €100 million will be allocated to non-lethal military assistance, aimed at helping Ukraine counter Russian missile and drone attacks. The remaining support is expected to flow into reconstruction and wider cooperation initiatives outlined in the roadmap.
“I am pleased that, in our meeting today, I was able to offer the president not only words of assurance of Ireland's support, but also firm and concrete commitments of assistance to Ukraine,” Martin said.
Ireland, which maintains a policy of military neutrality, has nonetheless provided consistent humanitarian and financial support to Kyiv since Russia’s war in 2022. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees have settled in Ireland under temporary protection measures.
“Since 2022, Ireland has welcomed thousands of Ukrainians to Ireland,” the Taoiseach said. “As I welcome their president here today, I reiterate the steadfast support of the Irish people for the people of Ukraine.”
