Italian energy major Eni and Algeria's oil and gas firm SONATRACH signed a Memorandum of Intent to expand cooperation on decarbonisation initiatives and emissions reduction in Algeria's oil and gas sector, the company announced on Monday.
The agreement builds on a three-year Memorandum of Intent signed in January 2023, which focused on reducing gas flaring, recovering and using associated gas, and mitigating emissions from upstream activities in Algeria.
Under the latest memorandum, the companies will broaden their cooperation to include natural carbon dioxide removal initiatives through forestry projects, as well as enhanced monitoring, measurement and reduction of methane emissions in line with international oil and gas standards.
As part of the cooperation, the companies conducted a Leak Detection and Repair campaign across 800 kilometres of pipelines, monitoring around 7,500 points and reducing fugitive emissions.
Eni has operated in Algeria since 1981 and recorded net production of approximately 132,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025.
