ISTANBUL
Turkiye's benchmark stock index closed the first transaction day of the year at 1,926.66 points on Monday, up 3.71% from the previous close.
Starting the day at 1,871.25 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index gained 69.01 points from the previous year's close of 1,857.65 points.
The index's lowest value during the day was 1,864.79 points, while its daily high was 1,926.66.
The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 1.56 trillion Turkish liras (some $117 billion) by market close, with a daily trading volume of 21.9 billion liras ($1.63 billion).
During the day, 92 stocks on the index rose, seven fell, and one was unchanged compared to Friday's close.
The highest trading volumes were posted by flag carrier Turkish Airlines, private lender Garanti BBVA, and iron/steel producer Eregli.
Automobile producer Tofas was the best performer, with its shares up 9.58%, while stocks of conglomerate Verusa Holding saw the sharpest drop, 3.85%.
The price of one ounce of gold was $1,830 by market close, down from $1,824.65 at Friday's close.
The price of Brent crude oil was around $78.5 per barrel as of 6.30 p.m. local time (1530GMT).
