BIST 100 index surges some 1,120 points from last week's close, US dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate stands around 5.36

Turkish stocks up 1.26 pct at close

ANKARA

Turkey's benchmark stock index ended Monday up 1.26 percent to close at 89,951.09 points.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index surged 1,120.27 points from last week's close, as it started the first business day of the week at 89,444.74 points.

During Monday's trading, the BIST 100 climbed over the 90,000 threshold to hit 90,227.88 points, while 71 stocks on the index rose, 19 fell, and 10 were flat compared to the previous close.

As of the daily close, the market value of the benchmark index totaled nearly 581 billion Turkish liras ($107.4 billion) with a daily trading volume of 4.79 billion liras ($893 million).

Leading listed companies by market capitalization were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($6.45 billion) and lenders Garanti Bankasi ($6.33 billion) and Akbank ($5.74 billion).

Garanti Bankasi, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines and Akbank saw the highest daily trade volumes on Monday -- accounting for nearly 38.5 percent of the BIST 100's total trade volume.

Shares of prominent Turkish sports club Galatasaray (GSRAY) enjoyed the highest increase, soaring 7.44 percent, while stocks of cement producer Goltas Cimento (GOLTS) saw the biggest drop, losing 7.12 percent.

By market close, one U.S. dollar traded for 5.3610 Turkish liras, down from Friday's close of 5.4160.

The euro/lira rate slightly decreased to 6.1400, compared with 6.1590 at the previous close.

The GBP/TRY exchange rate stood at 6.8620, while one British pound traded for 6.8580 Turkish liras at Friday's close.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, the price of one ounce of gold was around $1,291.40 at daily close, versus $1,290.15 at the previous close.

After hovering between $57.43 and $58.89 during the day, a barrel of Brent oil was sold for $58.40 as of 6.15 p.m. local time (1515GMT) on Monday.
