BIST 100 index surges over 480 points in midweek close, USD/TRY exchange rate falls to 5.66

Turkish stocks up 0.48% at daily close

ANKARA

Turkey's benchmark stock index ended Wednesday up 0.48% to close at 101,930.07 points.

Starting the day at 101,470.65 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index surged 482.68 points from Tuesday's close at 101,447.39 points.

During Wednesday's trading, the BIST 100 hovered between 100,600.31 points and 102,094.80 points -- 60 stocks on the index rose, 28 fell, and 12 were flat compared to the previous close.

Closing the day with a market value of nearly 675 billion Turkish liras ($118 billion), the benchmark index posted a daily trading volume of 8.1 billion Turkish liras ($1.4 billion).

Shares of national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, private lender Garanti BBVA and state lender Halkbank saw the highest trading volumes on Wednesday -- accounting for 36% of the benchmark index's total trade volume.

Stocks of cement producer Konya Cimento were the top gainers, rising 20%, while Adese Alisveris Merkezleri, which operates in the wholesale and retail trade sector, saw the biggest drop, falling 9.43%.

An ounce of gold was sold for $1,502.30 at the daily close in Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, versus $1,503.50 at the previous close.

The price of Brent oil was $64.25 per barrel as of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT) on Wednesday, with a day range of $63.50 to $65.00.
