Turkish stocks sharply down at Thursday close

ANKARA 

Turkiye's benchmark stock index closed with losses on Thursday, sharply down 8.17% to 1,851.38 points.

Starting the day at 2,049.74 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index lost 164.65 points from Wednesday's close of 2,016.03 points.

The index's lowest value during the day was 1,826.83 points, while its daily high was 1,953.15.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 1.5 trillion Turkish liras ($107.7 billion) by market close, with a daily trading volume of 25.3 billion Turkish liras ($1.77 billion).

During the fourth transaction day of the week, all 100 stocks fell compared to Wednesday's close.

The highest trading volumes were posted by iron and steel producer Eregli, flag carrier Turkish Airlines and private lender Garanti BBVA.

Over five companies saw their stock price plummet 10%.

One ounce of gold traded for $1,967.40 by market close, up from $1,896 at the previous close, according to data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

Price of Brent crude oil was around $99.22 per barrel with a 5.5% daily gain as of 6.10 p.m. local time (1510GMT) on Thursday. The price of the international benchmark had a daily range of $94.38 to $102.23 per barrel.
