ISTANBUL

Turkey's benchmark stock index climbed 0.26 percent to close at 104,861.64 points on Tuesday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index started the day at 104,664.12 points, gaining 266.98 points from the previous close of 104,594.66 points. 

The benchmark index hovered between 104,154.43 and 105,929.13 points during Tuesday's trading.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 688.5 billion Turkish liras ($126.2 billion) by market close, and the daily trading volume was 9.3 billion Turkish liras ($1.7 billion).

On the second transaction day of the week, 46 stocks on the index were on the rise, 42 were on the decline, and 12 were flat compared to the previous close.

The top listed companies by market value were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($8.57 billion), private lender Garanti ($7.25 billion), and leading chemical producer Tupras ($7.12 billion).

The highest trading volumes were posted by national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, iron/steel producer Kardemir, and Garanti.

Shares of major appliance producer Vestel were the top gainers -- up 8.84 percent -- and energy company Aksen dropped the most, 9.67 percent.

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate rose slightly to 5.4780 at close, versus Monday's close of 5.4620.

The euro/lira rate rose to 6.2210 at Tuesday's close, versus 6.2010 at the previous close.

One British pound traded for 7.2810 Turkish liras, while the GBP/TRY rate was 7.2470 at the close on Monday. 

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, the price of one ounce of gold reached $1,309.80 by market close, up from 1,306.60 at the previous close.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $67.35 per barrel as of 6 p.m. (1500GMT) Tuesday.
