Turkey's Borsa Istanbul down at close

ANKARA

Turkey's benchmark stock index closed the day down 0.08 percent at 108,859.62 points with a trade volume of 6.9 billion Turkish liras ($1.77 billion) on Monday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index fell 89.73 points, compared with 108,949.35 points at Friday's close.

The banking sector index gained 0.82 percent, while the holding sector index fell 1.10 percent.

Among all sectors, the tourism sector index was the top performer with 2.24 percent. The mining sector index suffered the biggest drop, losing 3.91 percent.

Supermarket chain Migros' stocks performed the best, rising 5.91 percent, while ICBC Turkey Bank saw the largest decline of the day, as its stocks dropped 8.47 percent.

Five stocks with the highest trade volume were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines (THYAO), defense company Aselsan (ASELS), private lender Garanti (GARAN), Turkey's top oil refinery Tupras (TUPRS), and electronics/appliances manufacturer Vestel (VESTL).

The BIST Gold Exchange index went down 0.62 percent, with one kilogram of gold traded at 159,576 Turkish liras ($41,151) as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT), down from Friday's closing price of 159,900 Turkish liras ($41,251).

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate rose to 3.8860 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) Monday, compared with 3.8640 at Friday's close.

On the first day of the week, the EUR/TRY rate also rose to 4.5330 by market close, while one euro traded for 4.5030 liras at the close on Friday.

As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT) Monday, the price of Brent oil was $63.54 per barrel, compared with Friday's close at $63.93.
