Anadolu Agency panel marks Women’s Rights Day
Women’s Rights Day in Türkiye celebrates adoption of law granting Turkish women right to vote, be elected in 1934 under leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

ANKARA
Anadolu Agency on Monday hosted a panel on being a woman in the media in an event to mark Women’s Rights Day in Türkiye.
Speaking at the panel, Serdar Karagoz, Anadolu Agency’s chairman of the board and director general, said that when women in the Republic of Türkiye were given the right to vote under the leadership of its founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, 88 years ago, women in many Western countries were deprived of the same rights.
Karagoz noted that Anadolu Agency journalist Esma Nayman was among the 17 women elected as lawmakers in Türkiye’s 1935 general elections, adding that one of the agency’s founders, Halide Edip Adivar, was also a woman.
“Halide Edip also gave the name Anadolu to our agency during the War of Independence,” said Karagoz.
He underlined that Anadolu Agency had more women during his tenure, while work on increasing the number of women in management positions also continues.
Karagoz vowed to support women in the media with “our solution-oriented journalism approach that takes action against injustice and discrimination.”
At the beginning of the program, Anadolu Agency’s Discrimination Line was introduced to the participants.
Türkiye named Dec. 5 Women’s Rights Day to celebrate the adoption of a law granting Turkish women the right to vote and be elected in 1934.
