Thai premier says will ‘return power to people’ amid speculation about snap election

ISTANBUL

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Thursday said that he will "return power to the people," amid speculation about house dissolution and a snap election.

“I have returned power to the people,” he said in a Facebook post, according to the Thai PBS.

According to several media reports, including from public broadcaster Thai PBS and The Nation news outlet, he has submitted a royal motion to dissolve the parliament to pave the way for early elections.

The reported action comes amid border clashes with Cambodia that killed at least 15 people.

Anutin of the conservative Bhumjaithai party was elected the 32nd prime minister of Thailand with the support of the People’s Party by defeating his rival from the ruling Pheu Thai party, Chaikasem Nitisiri, on Sept. 5. He formed a minority government.

Earlier today, according to The Nation, the parliament was holding a session for the draft constitutional amendment bill, which has already passed scrutiny by the parliamentary committee. They were considering the voting threshold required to approve a new constitution drafted by the committee.

The Bhumjaithai Party effectively broke its agreement with the People’s Party on constitutional reform by siding with a minority proposal from the constitutional drafting committee to preserve the Senate’s veto power, which the People's Party did not agree with.

It was proposed that future constitutional amendments be approved by a simple majority, but the meeting instead opted to revert to the requirement that at least one-third of senators support any amendment, which several Bhumjaithai Party lawmakers joined.

The Nation reported earlier that People’s Party leaders were summoning their lawmakers to sign a motion to initiate a no-confidence vote.

There was no official confirmation whether he had submitted the motion for dissolution of the parliament or not.

If the house is dissolved, a general election must be held within 60 days.
