ISTANBUL

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has asked Myanmar to stop attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructures.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan visited Myanmar on Thursday in his capacity as ASEAN chair, according to a statement from the Malaysian Foreign Ministry. He met junta chief Min Aung Hlaing and other high-ranking government officials.

Hasan urged "the cessation of attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructures, for the declaration of ceasefires, and for the channelling of humanitarian assistance to those in need, without restrictions," it said.

It was reported earlier that at least 32 people were killed and more than 50 injured when the junta bombed a Buddhist festival in northwestern Myanmar.

Hasan also expressed Malaysia's readiness to offer "its 'good offices' and provide a conducive and neutral environment to facilitate inclusive dialogue with all Myanmar stakeholders, underscoring ASEAN's commitment to an all-inclusive solution."

Strengthening regional cooperation to stop transnational crimes, especially drug trafficking and online scams, was discussed, as well as the admission of Timor-Leste as the 11th member of ASEAN.

He urged Myanmar to hold upcoming elections at the end of the year "with the principles of free, fair, transparent, and credible processes."

Hasan said that sending envoys for the election observation will be discussed with members, along with Myanmar's invitation.

He also brought up the Rohingya situation and stressed the importance of "addressing the root cause of their displacement from Myanmar."
