Russian national debt increases by 21% in 2025
Domestic debt up by 29.1% while external decreases by 15.4%, according to Russian state audit institution
MOSCOW
Russia's national debt increased by 21%, or 6.1 trillion rubles (about $76.25 billion), in 2025, according to the Russian daily Vedomosti.
In 2025, Russia's national debt reached 35.1 trillion rubles ($438.75 billion), Vedomosti said, citing a report from the Russian Accounts Chamber, the country's supreme state audit institution.
The country's domestic debt increased by 29.1%, or 6.9 trillion rubles ($86.25 billion), reaching 30.7 trillion rubles ($383.75), while external debt decreased by 15.4%, or 818.4 billion rubles ($10.23 billion), falling to 4.5 trillion rubles ($56.25 billion).
External debt comprises all obligations of the state, banks, companies, and other organizations, as well as a portion of loans owed to foreign creditors.
State external debt refers only to the obligations of government authorities.
