Russian court fines Zoom $964,000

Zoom fined again by Moscow for failing to fulfill obligations under Russian law regarding activities of foreign individuals on internet

ISTANBUL

Zoom was fined 79.6 million rubles ($964,000) by a Moscow court Tuesday for failing to fulfill its obligations under Russian law regarding activities of foreign individuals on the internet, according to media reports.

"By the decision of the magistrate of judicial district No. 422 of the Tagansky district of the city of Moscow, Zoom Communication was found guilty of committing an administrative offense under Part 3 of Article 13.49 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (repeated violation, expressed in failure to fulfill obligations stipulated by the legislation on the activities of foreign persons on the Internet in the territory of the Russian Federation). It was assigned an administrative fine in the amount of 79 million 609 thousand 733 rubles," said the court, the Tass news agency reported.

The videotelephony company had previously been fined 15 million rubles ($181,700) for failing to localize user data.

Several Western internet companies, including Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, have also been occasionally fined in Russia for violating laws.
