KARACHI, Pakistan

At least one policeman was killed and 17 others were injured in a bomb blast targeting a security vehicle in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province on Monday, an official confirmed.

The explosion, the latest in a series of attacks on security forces, occurred outside the University of Balochistan in Quetta, the provincial capital.

"A police truck on duty at the gate of Balochistan University was hit by an explosive device planted in a motorcycle ... Those involved in the incident will be arrested and brought to justice," Liaquat Shahwani, a spokesman for the provincial government, said on Twitter.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The province is a key route of the $64-billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor project, which aims to connect China's strategically important northwestern Xinjiang province to the Gwadar port in southern Pakistan, through a network of roads, railways, and pipelines to transport cargo, oil, and gas.
