Pakistani lawmakers sentenced to 10 years in jail for attacking military installations
Convicts belong to incarcerated former Premier Imran Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf party

KARACHI, Pakistan
A court in Pakistan sentenced two opposition lawmakers to 10 years in jail on Tuesday for their involvement in attacks on military installations in 2023, according to court records.
The two lawmakers are among 32 others who are facing similar charges.
Ahmed Chattha from the federal parliament and Malik Ahmed Bhachar, who is the opposition leader in the provincial Punjab legislative assembly, were convicted by an anti-terrorism court in the northeastern Sargodha district for their involvement in violence during protests against the arrest of incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 9, 2023.
They belong to Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party (PTI), the largest opposition party in both chambers of the federal parliament.
The lawmakers may appeal the rulings to the high court, and subsequently the Supreme Court.
Several military installations, including the army headquarters, commonly known as the General Headquarters (GHQ) in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, were stormed by protestors after Khan was briefly arrested in a corruption case. The PTI denies involvement.
Khan is currently languishing in a jail in Rawalpindi after being sentenced to 14 years in jail in a corruption case. He is facing a slew of cases, which he dubs as politically motivated.
