4 soldiers killed in ambush in southern Philippines
Operation launched to hunt perpetrators after attack in Munai town, says military
ISTANBUL
The Philippines' army launched a "clearing and security" operation after an ambush in southern Lanao del Norte province, which killed at least four soldiers and injured one, the military said.
The attack occurred at a village in Munai town, where soldiers were conducting operations in coordination with law enforcement agencies.
It targeted the personnel of the 2nd mechanized infantry brigade and was allegedly carried out by members of "a local terrorist group," the Armed Forces of the Philippines said in a statement.
The statement, however, did not mention the group's name.
The military has intensified "focused" actions to locate and neutralize the perpetrators, prevent further threats to civilians, and ensure the safety and stability of the local communities, it added.
"The AFP remains resolute in holding those responsible accountable and sustaining operations until peace and security are restored," the statement further said.
