KABUL
Afghan Taliban hit three separate cities in attacks Monday as Afghan security forces killed 14 of the attackers and captured 2 others alive.
In a pre-dawn attack, seven insurgents targeted a NATO compound at Kabul's International Airport, firing RPGs and assault rifles as one security official said police had killed 5 of the attackers and two others had blown themselves up while trying to a building.
"At this stage, we don't have any losses," Kabul's chief of police and General Mohammad Ayub Salangi said after hours-long fighting with the insurgents.
Six Taliban fighters staged another attack in Qualat town of southern Zabul province, targeting the city hall. One of the attackers first detonated a vehicle full of explosives, wounding 15 civilians and 3 police officers.
Afghan security forces killed five of the attackers as they attempted to storm the city hall, deputy governor of Zabul Mohammad Jan Rasoulyar said.
The third attack came in Surobi, a town near Kabul, where a suicide bomber detonated the explosives on his body.
Taliban attacks in Afghanistan have mounted since April 28, when the insurgents announced they launched "a Spring offensive."
