MAROUA, Cameroon
Around 5000 Cameroonian soldiers have been deployed to the country's border with Nigeria to battle Boko Haram militants.
"Boko Haram has acquired modern arms and this is why we are boosting our preparations at the level of personnel and equipment," Col. Didier Badjeck, the chief of the communication division at the Cameroonian Defense Ministry, told Anadolu Agency.
Badjeck declined to elaborate on the exact measures being taken by the army on the border with neighboring Nigeria.
"Boko Haram members also follow the media," he said. "This is why we cannot reveal our strategy."
AA correspondent had noticed a rise in the number of military personnel in Maroua, Cameroon's northernmost region on the border with Nigeria.
The troops deployment comes after Boko Haram, which is active in northern Nigeria, had stepped up attacks on the northern parts of Cameroon.
On May 16, the militant group kidnapped ten Chinese workers following an attack on an area in northern Cameroon.
The Chinese were working for a company that had recently won a bid for the upgrade of a main road in northern Cameroon.
