US investigating reported drone sightings above DC military base
'Currently there is no credible threat to Fort McNair,' Pentagon says, adding force protection measures to be adjusted 'as needed'
WASHINGTON
The Pentagon said Thursday it is investigating reports of unidentified drones spotted near Fort Lesley J. McNair, a major US military base in Washington, DC.
"We are aware of the reported drone sightings near Fort McNair and the surrounding areas. We are working with our law enforcement and interagency partners to monitor and investigate the reported sightings," it said in a statement.
The statement came a day after a Washington Post report said US officials detected unidentified drones above the Washington Army base where Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth live.
Per report, the military has been operating at a higher alert level since the start of US-Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28.
The Pentagon said its "top priority" is the safety of service members and civilian personnel who work and live on the base.
"Currently there is no credible threat to Fort McNair, but we will continue to monitor the situation and adjust force protection measures as needed," it added.
