WASHINGTON 

U.S. President Donald Trump will address the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction when he chairs a Security Council meeting later this month, the U.S.'s UN mission said Friday.

The Sept. 26 meeting was announced by the Washington's UN envoy, Nikki Haley, earlier this week, and was originally described as focusing solely on Iran. But the mission said it will also "address the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, including chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles."

"From Europe to the Middle East to Asia, proliferation of such weapons threatens far too many innocent civilians," it said in a statement.

"Recent developments are bearing this out," the statement added, pointing to a chemical attack on British soil blamed on Russia, and concerns the Syrian regime is preparing chemical weapons ahead of an offensive on northwestern Syria's Idlib province.

The U.S. mission continued to single out Iran, saying it is the source of "continued and growing concern," due to Tehran's weapons transfers in the region.
