NYC Mayor Mamdani makes unannounced trip to Washington for talks with Trump: Reports

ISTANBUL

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani made an unexpected trip to Washington, DC, on Thursday to meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House, according to media reports.

The meeting, scheduled for 1 pm local time (1800GMT), was not listed on Mamdani's public schedule.

A spokesperson for the mayor confirmed to the New York Times that the meeting would take place. The White House did not immediately comment on the matter, the newspaper said.

While the full agenda was not disclosed, sources told the Times and the New York Post that their discussions would focus in part on housing development in New York City.

Citing an undisclosed source, the Post reported that the meeting could pave the way for a "historic investment" in new housing across the metropolis.

The sit-down marks Mamdani's second meeting with Trump since his election victory in November.

Despite sharp ideological differences, the two have maintained a notably cordial relationship, exchanging private text messages and offering mutual public praise. Trump described Mamdani as a "nice guy" with a "bad policy" during his State of the Union address on Tuesday.
