In a landmark change for getting around in the Big Apple, on Monday New York City is starting to charge drivers who enter the downtown area.

Officially known as Central Business District Tolling Program, the project aims to cut down on traffic congestion, generate revenue for use in future transportation improvements, and improve air quality, according to the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

"This is a significant milestone, bringing us closer to a future where New Yorkers have cleaner air, better public transit, and less traffic clogging our streets," Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York state, said last month.

"This program is critical to New York City's long-term success, ensuring our commuters and businesses are able to grow and thrive,” she added.

Implementation of the new policy follows completion of a 30-day public review.

Similar fees charged to drivers entering Sweden’s capital Stockholm, the British capital London, and the city-state of Singapore have enjoyed success in cutting down traffic and raising revenue, said the transportation authority.
