The tally of globally confirmed coronavirus cases surpassed 3 million Tuesday, with US having nearly one-third of all cases, according to data compiled by American-based Johns Hopkins University.

A total of 3,063,814 cases were registered and the US, as the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, neared the 1 million threshold with 990,135.

The university's data showed 906,898 patients won the battle against the virus.

Spain has the highest number of recoveries with nearly 124,000, followed by Germany with 117,400 and the US has 111,587.

But the US continues to be the worst-hit country with deaths from the virus, with 56,475 fatalities, followed by Italy and Spain.

China, ground zero of the virus, has registered nearly 84,000 cases and one more fatality since it confirmed a nearly 50% rise in its death toll -- bringing the number to 4,637. Those figures continue to raise questions in and outside China.

Overall, the virus has spread to 185 countries since it first emerged in China in December.

Despite the rising number of cases, most who contract the virus suffer mild symptoms before making a recovery.
