Military jet crashes in California, 2 pilots rescued
Pilots transferred to hospital, statuses remain unclear

WASHINGTON
Emergency crews are responding to reports that a military plane crashed into the water near Shelter Island in San Diego, California, the city's Fire-Rescue Department said Wednesday.
The incident was reported at 10.16 a.m. local time (1816GMT), and emergency crews arrived roughly nine minutes later, according to the agency. Both pilots have been rescued, and the military has confirmed that just two pilots were onboard, the Fire-Rescue Department said.
They were transported to the Hillcrest Medical Center at the University of California-San Diego.
The department referred all questions on the status of the pilots and the aircraft to the military. Comment was not immediately available from the Pentagon.
