Canada names new ambassador to US at 'crucial time' in relations

ISTANBUL

Mark Wiseman, a veteran in law, business, and finance, will be Canada’s next ambassador to the US, effective Feb. 15, said Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday.

Wiseman, who "has deep experience with both countries’ economies, financial markets" is currently a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Canada-US Relations.

Carney said that Wiseman "brings immense experience, extensive contacts, and deep commitment at this crucial time of transformation of our relationship with the United States."

The appointment comes as relations between the two countries seems to have stabilized following trade tensions and disputes earlier in the year, under the US' second Trump administration.

Carney said Wiseman will serve as a "core member of our negotiating team," helping to "advance the interests of Canadian workers, businesses, and institutions" while simultaneously "building opportunities for both Canada and the United States."

The prime minister's office said Wiseman will work towards advancing "secure borders, a strengthened trade and investment relationship, and cooperation between Canada and the United States on global challenges."

Wiseman will replace outgoing Ambassador Kirsten Hillman, who Carney thanked for her "immense contributions" to the role.
