Attack on US Capitol not an insurrection, claims Florida state governor Florida Valisi Ron DeSantis

NEW YORK

The governor of the US state of Florida said Saturday that the deadly Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol was not an insurrection.

"It was not an insurrection," Ron DeSantis, who is seeking the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, told comedian Russell Brand in an interview on his streaming show.

"These were people that were there to attend a rally, and then they were there to protest," he added.

Claiming that those taking part in the incident did not intend to overthrow the US government, Desantis accused the media of using that narrative for partisan and political aims.

On Jan. 6, 2021, far-right groups and supporters of former US President Donald Trump stormed the Congress building, where the session for the approval of the results of the Nov. 3, 2020 election was held.

Five people, including a police officer, lost their lives as a result of the attack.
