Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema fired Joel Kamoko on Tuesday, who served as the permanent secretary in charge of technical services at the Ministry of Education.

"The decision is made pursuant to article 270 of the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia," State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka said in a statement in the capital, Lusaka.

Hamasaka did not say why Kamoko was dismissed, but public speculation pointed to disciplinary action after local media reported Monday that Kamoko had appeared "intoxicated" on a state broadcaster’s news bulletin the night before giving details about the adoption of a new learning curriculum in public schools.

"The president has expressed his gratitude to Mr. Kamoko for his service to the Government of the Republic of Zambia and wishes him well in his future endeavors," Hamasaka said.

"The president continues to implore all public officers to serve diligently and with dedication to national duties."
