Sudan has accepted mediation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) regarding border issues with Ethiopia and the Great Ethiopia Renaissance Dam (GERD), the Sudanese Cabinet said on Tuesday.

“In its regular meeting on Tuesday, Sudan has discussed a report presented by a technical ministerial committee that studied the UAE mediation and the council has principally accepted the initiative in the context that maintains the high interests of Sudan,” according to a Cabinet statement.

“The Prime Minister has discussed the many initiatives and mediation over the disputes with Ethiopia regarding the dam and borders” it added.

Sudan Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok asked the UN, European Union, African Union, and the US last week to intervene in the crisis concerning the Ethiopian dam.

Sudan has repeatedly warned that the second unilateral filling of the dam by Ethiopia that is expected in June would threaten its national security.
