MOGADISHU, Somalia

The Somali military on Friday claimed to have killed 30 al-Shabaab terrorists in an operation in the country’s Middle Shabelle region.

In a Twitter post, the military said some 24 terrorists were also wounded in the operation conducted in the Jalable area.

It said that specially trained forces (Gorgor) have also killed a senior al-Shabaab commander identified by the army as Jama Dhere.

Gorgor is a Turkish-trained unit and has been proven to be one of the best and capable units in the Somali military’s fight against al-Shabaab terror group.

Military operations have intensified in recent weeks in southern and central regions of the horn of Africa country. The military said that it has killed 130 terrorists in recent weeks in Middle Shabelle region and liberated six villages from the group.

Somalia is preparing to hold its parliamentary and presidential elections in the coming months.
