Kenya reported three more coronavirus fatalities and 98 new infections on Tuesday.

The countrywide death toll now stands at 1,716, while the number of cases has reached 98,432, according to the Health Ministry.

Recoveries increased by 154 to reach 81,255, it added.

Some 3,369 more COVID-19 tests were conducted over the past day, raising the total in the country of over 55 million to 1,097,647.

Kenya has seen a second wave of infections over recent weeks, with the capital Nairobi being the area hit hardest.

Earlier this month, President Uhuru Kenyatta extended the nationwide night curfew until March 12.

In an executive order, he also announced a 60-day ban on all gatherings, except funerals and weddings of up to 150 people.

While schools in the country opened last week, there is a 90-day ban on extracurricular activities such as sports, drama, music, and exchange visits.

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed more than 1.94 million lives in 191 countries and regions since December 2019, according to the US’ Johns Hopkins University.

Over 91 million infections have been recorded across the world, with recoveries nearing 50.5 million, the data shows.
