The Kenyan military says it killed nine members of the Somalia-based al-Qaeda affiliate al Shabaab militant group on Friday.

An operation was launched in the Jungal area of Somalia by the Kenya Defense Forces and the Somali National Army.

Kenyan military spokesman Col. David Obonyo told Anadolu Agency that the militants were killed about 30 kilometers [18 miles] north-west of Baradhere town.

“Their vehicle, a double-cabin Hilux Surf got stuck in the mud; we saw them and immediately our forces attacked them. We managed to kill nine terrorists and recovered 9 AK47 rifles and five improvised explosive devices (IEDs),” Obonyo said.

On Oct. 25, Kenyan forces destroyed an operations base in Yantooy, Somalia and destroyed two boats that militants were using to cross River Jubba; 15 militants were killed during the morning raid, the army claimed.
