ALGIERS

Two people were killed in forest fires west of the capital Algiers on Saturday, according to the civil defense agency.

Fires swept through the provinces of Oran, Chlef, Blida and Tipaza since Friday, the state-run television said.

The civil defense agency said two people were killed and 10 others suffered smoke inhalation and were moved to a hospital in Tipaza, 50 kilometers west of Algiers.

The agency said efforts were underway to bring the fires under control, but without specifying the reason for the blaze.

No information was yet available about injuries or damage from fires in other provinces.

In July, Algeria saw similar forest fires, with the authorities launching an investigation into the reasons, but no results were yet announced.
