WASHINGTON
British resident Shaker Aamer has been released from the controversial U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Pentagon announced Friday.
Formerly the last British resident to be held at the prison facility, Aamer, a 46 year-old Saudi national, was accused of leading a Taliban unit and meeting with al-Qaeda's deceased leader Osama bin Laden. He was never charged.
He was transferred to UK authorities after being detained at the facility for over 13 years.
The U.K. government confirmed that Aamer has returned to London by private plane.
