WASHINGTON  

Two small U.S. naval vessels have been held by Iranian forces on Tuesday, according to the Pentagon. 

"Earlier today, we lost contact with two small U.S. naval craft en route from Kuwait to Bahrain," a defense official told Anadolu Agency.

U.S. authorities have been in communication with Iranian authorities, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, and added that Iran has informed American authorities of the safety and well-being of naval crew.

"We have received assurances the sailors will promptly be allowed to continue their journey," the officials said.

According to American media there are 10 American sailors on board.
