GENEVA
The United Nations on Friday has said Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem will participate in the Geneva-II conference on Syria. A peace forum, dubbed Geneva-2, is set to get started in the Swiss city of Montreux.
Corinne Momal-Vanian, the head of the Information Service at the UN office in Geneva announced earlier on Friday "We received a positive response from Syrian government for Geneva-II conference and Muallem will be attending the conference."
Vanian said the UN has sent an invitation to the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolution Forces (SNCORF) Chairman Ahmed al-Jabra on behalf of the opposition. She said "Invitations were sent at the same time to all delegations. Jabra was the one that received the invitation for the opposition.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will be arriving in Geneva on Tuesday for a disarmament meeting and will deliver a speech at the meeting in the UN Office at Geneva on Tuesday morning will attend the Geneva-II conference.
In a response to a question whether a sample of an inviation which was sent to Syrian government and opposition can be shared with public, Vanian said a sample of invitation cannot be shared with public.
Geneva-2 is scheduled to open with a meeting in the Swiss city of Montreux on January 22.
