United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Iraqi capital Baghdad on Monday for a brief visit during which he will discuss political and security conditions in both Iraq and Syria with top Iraqi officials.
As soon as he arrived at Baghdad International Airport, Ban headed to the Green Zone, which is home to major state institutions and the homes of senior government officials, where he met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
Talks between Ban and al-Maliki are expected to focus on political and security conditions in Iraq and the influx of Syrian refugees into Iraq's northern region.
Talks are also expected to focus on recent military operations carried out by the army in Iraq's western Anbar province.
The two officials are expected to convene a press conference following their meeting.
After meeting al-Maliki, Ban is scheduled to head to the headquarters of Iraq's Council of Representatives to meet with Council Speaker Usama al-Nujayfi.
