British Prime Minister David Cameronwho made a visit to British combat forces in Afghanistan on Monday said, "basic level of security has been achieved" and that troops now can "come home with their heads held high".
On a "surprise" pre-Christmas trip to Afghanistan, PremierCameron came together with British troops based at the Camp Bastion in Helmand as they are currently serving in the country.
"The timetable for the withdrawal of British troops is a plan that we will stick to. I said, back in 2010, that after the end of 2014 there would not be British troops in a combat role and we will stick to that" said Cameron while he was visiting British forces at a main UK base and added that basic level of security was achieved and so troops could leave Afghanistan with their heads held high.
More than 5 thousand British troops are currently serving in Afghanistan. They are mainly based at Camp Bastion which is a main UK base in the country.
British combat troops are expected to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of 2014 however, the withdrawal of the troops will be paused during the election period, to try and maintain stability in the country. Some UK troops are also expected to remain in Afghanistan in order to provide security training for Afghan forces after 2014.
