KARACHI, Pakistan
Flash floods caused by torrential rains have claimed 13 lives in the southwestern Pakistani province of Balochistan, officials said Thursday.
Rescue workers have recovered 13 bodies in Khuzdar district located 140 km off Karachi, the country’s commercial capital, Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Malik Baloch confirmed.
A vehicle carrying 20 passengers was reportedly washed away by flash floods caused by heavy rains, which began Wednesday night.
Rescue workers and troops from the Frontier Corps (FC) -- a paramilitary force in Balochistan assisting police -- were still looking for the remaining seven passengers, Khan Waseh, a spokesman for the paramilitary force, said.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed his sorrow over the incident.
