LONDON
A suspected cannibal who was stunned with a taser gun by police died along with his victim, police have said.
Matthew Williams, 34, was found to be eating the face of 22-year-old Cerys Marie Yemm after police were called by a "concerned" member of the public to the Sirhowy Arms Hotel in Wales, according to British media reports on Friday.
Police said officers shocked Williams with a taser during the incident on Thursday night and Yemm later died of her injuries.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is looking into the deaths and has also met with the victim’s family.
Chief Inspector Paul Staniforth said in a press conference on Friday: "The post mortem for Cerys will start today, although may not be complete for some time."
Violent attack
"Speculative comments about what happened and cause of death are unhelpful," he said.
He told reporters that officers were supporting Yemm's family as well as officers who attended the murder scene.
The British daily the Guardian reported that Yemm had suffered facial injuries and Williams had been recently released from prison where he was serving a sentence for a violent attack on a former partner.
The Guardian also reported a security guard at the hotel had told them that Yemm had been a victim of cannibalism.
Gwent police have refused to comment on the cannibalism claims.
